Nigeria International Medicine Project

In September 2003, Joyce Olutade, M.D. Assistant Professor traveled to Ibadan, Nigeria to participate in a Cervical Cancer Prevention Workshop. Participating physicians and nurses from three neighboring southwestern states were trained to screen for cervical dysplasia using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid and the Papanicolaou smear. Colposcopy and cryotherapy were demonstrated. She worked in partnership with Dr. Cecilia Amotsuka, founder of Save Our Future Foundation (SOFF) and Dr. A. Omigbodun, Head of Ob/Gyn Department , University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria Dr. Amotsuka facilitated community awareness and availability of screening for cervical cancer for women within the participating sites.

The department of Family Medicine continues to support this international partnership through an interdisciplinary healthcare team that will travel to Nigeria twice a year to conduct training workshops and screening programs for women in the area.
