The University of Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Service

The University Hospitals and Clinics at the Medical Center serve as the principal teaching hospital for the PGY-1 year. During this year, residents rotate on many of the sub-specialty services to obtain rotation experiences in obstetrics (1 month), gynecology (1 month), emergency medicine (1 month), medicine/psychiatry (1 month) and pediatrics (3 months). The three months of pediatrics consist of pediatric wards, pediatric emergency room and well-baby nursery. Additionally, PGY-2 residents return to the University for a month of ambulatory pediatrics in the pediatric outpatient department. Obstetrical patients from our practice are delivered at UMC. PGY-2's also complete a month of pulmonary medicine at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located next door to the University. Also on the campus are the Addie McBryde Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and the Methodist Rehabilitation Center. Faculty in the Department of Family Medicine are available as consultants to the other specialty faculty and services at the University.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center is a 164-acre complex that serves as a diagnostic and treatment referral center for the entire state. As such, the University serves as an excellent teaching ground for complex patient care problems and a variety of medical illnesses. UMC offers specialized services such as a dialysis unit, sleep disorders center, clinical research center, coronary, intensive care and stroke units, cardiopulmonary and work evaluation laboratories and the newest in state-of-the art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. University Hospital is the only hospital in the state which offers organ transplants.

MS Baptist Medical Center Family Medicine Service

Our faculty and residents hospitalize patients in our community hospital, MS Baptist Medical Center. Residents and faculty rotate on a monthly basis the responsibility for the care of hospitalized patients, in addition to the patient's continuity physician who serves as consultant to the hospital team during the patient's hospital stay. All PGY-1's spend three non-consecutive months on the in-hospital team at MBMC supervised by an in-hospital upper level residents and an in-hospital faculty member. For the in-hospital team, this is an intensive hospital patient care month with the following goals and objectives:

  • Obtain an intensive hospital patient care experience in the community hospital setting.
  • Gain experience in emergency room assessment and management.
  • Develop consultation skills necessary in the private practice of Family Medicine. This includes appropriate use of consultants and serving as a consultant.
  • Understand indications for and performance of common hospital-based procedures and therapies instrumental in patient assessment and care.
  • Gain skills in basic laboratory and radiographic interpretation.
  • Gain basic medical computer skills.
  • Gain basic medical presentation skills.

PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents spend 3 non-consecutive months a year with hospital patient care responsibilities in addition to their clinic and specialty rotation experiences. The 2 hospital teams also include third and fourth year medical students. Rotating pharmacy residents also participate in hospital rounds.

The Family Medicine Service accepts all unreferred pediatric and adult medicine admissions through the emergency department. This, in addition to continuity patient admissions from our two family practice residency clinics, makes for a diversity of patient problems and a wealth of medical experience.
