Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine Residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center was the first (and remains the only!) community-based residency program at the Medical Center. Established in 1973, the Department of Family Medicine has grown from a 4-4-4 position program with 5 faculty into a 10-10-10 program with 19 fulltime faculty members. More than 3000 medical students have rotated through the department, and the residency program, fully accredited since its beginning, boasts 279 graduates, the majority of whom practice in rural underserved areas. Six of our faculty physicians are listed as one of the “Best Doctors in America”.UMC Family Medicine Seal

The medical students, residents, and faculty of the department are blessed to be able to blend the best of UMC’s academic opportunities with “real-life” community primary care experiences at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, our affiliated training hospital. The 30-year academic commitment between the two institutions offers unequaled opportunities for practice and educational excellence. Most recently, the department and the Baptist Medical Center have collaborated to produce a set of Family Medicine Evidence-Based Hospital Admission Orders for 20 of the most common conditions requiring inpatient care. Our two Jackson-area Family Medicine Clinics house our residents’ and faculty practices, and are proud to be the places that over 38,000 patients call their medical home. We have wholeheartedly adopted the practice of Evidence Based Family Medicine as a department, teaching and offering the best science as well as the best art of the practice of our specialty.

In April of the year 2000, Mississippi Governor Ronnie Musgrove signed House Bill 729, an Act creating the Family Medicine Medical Education Scholarship/Loan Program, the only one of its kind in the state. Exclusive to Family medicine, this program will provide a cost-free four year medical education (total value $100,000) for 20 freshman medical students, or loan repayment of up to $80,000 for Family Medicine residents, committing to practice in one of the 82 underserved counties in the state.

Our latest adventures include the development of our International Family Medicine Programs in Peru and Nigeria, the establishment of our Sports Medicine Fellowship in collaboration with the UMC Department of Orthopedics, and the opening of our Rural Family Medicine Programs in Holmes County, Mississippi.
